Leading vehicle warranty providers, Warranty Direct, claim to have found the ten most reliable family cars. They studied the data of 30,000 of their policies linked to family cars, and came up with a list of cars which suffer the least faults and breakdowns, making them the most reliable to drive.
1) Toyota Corolla: At the top of the reliability list is the Toyota Corolla, which was produced between 2001 and 2007, so there are still a great deal of them on the roads. Warranty Direct reported that the largest claim on a Corolla was £1397.96; and the most common reason for claiming on the warranty was to do with axle and suspension problems. With a 7% average yearly breakdown rate, the Corolla is well deserving of the top spot.
2) Honda Civic: In joint second place is the Honda Civic, which began production in 2006 and is still being made today. The largest reported claim was just £980.10; and most claims pertained to electrical problems. The Civic has an impressive annual breakdown rate of 10%.
3) Honda Accord: The Civic shares 2nd place with another classic Honda vehicle, the Accord. It was produced between 2002 and 2008 so there are still plenty of decent second hand Accords on the market. The Honda Accord has a breakdown rate of 10%, with the majority of people who claimed on their warranty doing so for engine issues, and the largest claim came in at £1658.80.
4) Mazda3: The Mazda3 also shares 2nd place on the list thanks to its 10% annual breakdown rate. Problems with the braking system were behind the majority of warranty claims, with £1672.04 being the largest amount claimed.
5) Toyota Auris: The Auris has been in production since 2007, and in that time it has managed an impressive annual breakdown rate of 11%. The largest amount claimed on warranty was £528.22, and the most reported reason for claiming was for cooling and heating system issues.
6) Toyota Prius: Toyata achieve their third entry into the top ten with the Prius coming in at number six. Produced between 2003 and 2009, the Prius was one of the first hybrid vehicles on the market, and paved the way for many others. Its average annual breakdown rate is 12%, with most people who claim on the warranty doing so for axle and suspension problems. The largest claim reported by Warranty Direct was £3257.87.
7) Ford C-Max: Ford’s C-Max has been in production since 2007, and has proved to be one of their most reliable vehicles ever, with only a 14% annual breakdown rate on average. The largest warranty claim for a C-Max is £828.90, and the reason most people claim is related to electrical problems.
8) Ford Mondeo: Another entry from Ford, the Mondeo has also been in production since 2007. It has an average annual breakdown rate of 15%, and, like the C-Max, most people claim on the warranty for electrical problems, with the largest claim totalling £1130.80.
9) Nissan Qashqai: Nissan’s only entry into the top ten reliable family cars is the Qashqai, which has been in production since 2007. It has an annual breakdown rate of 16%, and most people claim for electrical problems, with the largest amount being £1066.
10) Peugeot 308: In joint 9th place is Peugeot’s only entry onto the list, the 308. Again, this family vehicle has been in production since 2007 and has a breakdown rate of 16%. The largest amount claimed on a warranty is £728.80, with most people claiming for electrical problems.
